West Side Story contains some of the cleverest rhythmic music ever written. Mueller’s version of “Cool” provides the listener with a fresh take, reminding us why revisiting genius standards is worth the effort. This Big Band style arrangement features the fabulous drumming of Mike Nappi and Tobin Mueller’s powerful yet hip piano playing.
I say “Big Band”, but, in reality, this is a two-man “duet”, with Mueller playing all instruments other than drums: acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, B3 organ and Trilogy bass. Although it sounds like a jazz guitar solo in the middle, it’s a Wurlitzer (@2:04). “Cool” is a perfect example of the tension between letting it all hang out and holding back. Mueller uses a clip from the 1961 West Side Story film to illustrate the music, and the rhythms lineup with the dancing in a fun and serendipitous way. A stylized yet honest representation of teenage expression and pent-up energy.
“Standard Deviations” explores the relationships between great jazz standards by deviating between them, intermingling melodies and counter-melodies in unique multi-genre arrangements. Listen to the entire album, you won’t be disappointed. Link: https://tobinmueller.hearnow.com
